Moxibustion

Moxibustion or Moxa
Book Now

Moxibustion (“moxa”) is a traditional Chinese therapy that involves burning artemisia mugwort, a small, spongy herb, over some areas of the body to promote healing. This treatment increases blood flow, stimulates the flow of “qi,” and maintains general health.

Moxibustion can strengthen the immune system (so important these days). It warms the channels, promotes blood circulation, and reduces pain, especially pain that is worse with exposure to cold or damp weather.

We use moxibustion mostly on people with cold conditions. It warms the body and meridians, helping to promote blood and qi flow. We also sometimes use moxibustion with breech babies between weeks 34 and 36 of the pregnancy.

Moxa does have a distinct smell. When we use it, we do our best to air out the room afterward by opening a window. But if you notice a slight marijuana-type smell in the office – nope, we’re not smoking pot…we’re burning moxa.
