In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Liver Qi Stagnation refers to disharmony within the Liver meridian, disrupting the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy) throughout the body.
The Liver, in TCM, is responsible for anything related to movement. It assists in the pumping of blood; it helps move food through the digestive system and the resulting nutrients to the organs and systems. It’s also a filter for toxins – both physical, like when we drink alcohol or take pharmaceutical or recreational drugs, but it’s also for emotional toxins.
The Liver is the “handler” of stuff. When we have a lot of “stuff” coming at us – maybe juggling too many tasks or are busy at work and have family obligations – the Liver keeps everything running smoothly. But, when there’s just too much at once to handle, or if we’re eating unhealthy food or not getting enough sleep during this stressful time, sometimes the Liver stops doing a very good job of moving things through.
When this happens, we might have digestive issues, menstrual issues, headaches, muscular tension, or tightness. We might also become irritable, moody, short-tempered, or impatient. These are all symptoms of Liver Qi Stagnation.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help immensely with Liver Qi Stagnation – often with just one visit or the first dose of Chinese herbs.
You can also make some dietary and lifestyle changes if you feel you’re not handling stress well. Getting more exercise, yoga, meditation, or mindfulness is very helpful.
You can also help your Liver by choosing foods that are easy to digest and support its function. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help the digestive system so the Liver doesn’t have to work so hard to move food and nutrients.
Also, bitter foods such as dandelion greens can stimulate the Liver and promote the flow of qi. Also suitable for the Liver are spinach, kale, leeks, carrots, lemon, grapes, lychee, raspberries, and more. Healthy fats in nuts, seeds, and avocados can help support the Liver’s detoxification process.
Also, during times of high stress, when the Liver is getting very taxed, it’s best to avoid foods that burden the Liver, such as alcohol, caffeine, and processed foods.
Regular acupuncture is also a great way to keep your Liver happy and healthy!
